Haarlem is located in the center of Holland, just 10 miles from Amsterdam and is best known as the historical capital of the Holland earldom, the countytown of North Holland province, and the birthplace of Frans Hals. Area attractions worth a look include, the Frans Hals museum with paintings, 19C dolls house, Delfts Blauw earthenware, Teylers museum( the oldest in Holland), almshouses (about 500 years old), Cathedrals as Grote Kerk (1400). Other attractions close by include Spaarndam, the picturesque village best known for its smoked eal, Zandvoort, a seaside resort with a motor racing track & casino, Bloemendaal behind the dunes where villas stretch over wooded hills, the ruin of Brederoode Castle, the National Park on the long line of dunes with footpaths. |
